“HFS recently completed an executive search for our new CEO with excellent results. They demonstrated professionalism, kept the stakeholders informed, and guided us through a very complicated and important process.”–Sonoma Valley Hospital
Emanuel Medical Center (Emanuel) is a not-for-profit, community-based healthcare organization in Turlock, California, located in the state’s Central Valley. Facilities include a 209-bed acute care hospital, a 145-bed skilled nursing facility and a 49-bed assisted living facility. It is currently pending acquisition by Tenet Healthcare Corp. During the acquisition process, Emanuel’s controller and accounting supervisor both resigned on the same day.
David Neapolitan, Vice President and CFO at Emanuel, immediately set to work to fill those open positions. He decided to hire internally for the accounting supervisor position. Based on the lack of qualified candidates in the local area, he sought outside help for the controller position. Having successfully worked with HFS in the past and being impressed with its level of expertise, he hired the firm’s executive search and interim management team to conduct a search for an interim controller.
HFS interim healthcare management team’s first action was to meet internally to determine whether its network of healthcare professionals included a candidate that properly matched the job requirements and the situation. The team was well aware that it needed to find someone who would be willing to commute to Turlock. In addition, it was sensitive to the urgency to fill the vacancy.
Because HFS has a strong network of executive and management-level professionals in the healthcare industry, and has a clear understanding of the required roles and responsibilities of various management and executive levels, a candidate was quickly identified.
Mr. Neapolitan was presented with a profile of Benjamin Laborde, a seasoned healthcare financial professional, for review and consideration.
Within one week from the time that Mr. Neapolitan hired HFS, Benjamin Laborde, the recommended candidate, was on site at Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock in the interim controller position. He has been in the position since April 2013 and will remain until a permanent controller is hired. Laborde commutes, flying from his home in Irvine on Sunday and returning home on Friday.
Mr. Neapolitan commends Laborde’s experience, his understanding of the importance of the controller position, and his ability to communicate and keep the staff on an even keel regarding the upcoming sale to Tenet.
"HFS has a full scope of talent in varying financial areas- controller, accounting manager, and licensing, and a broad spectrum of services related to the financial arena in the healthcare industry."
